Hockey captures the essence of Canadian spirit, and the Guelph Jr.
Gryphons Girls Bantam BB team exemplified that at the St Thomas Big Cat
pre-season showcase. This tournament was
this first big test for this new group of girls and they rose to the occasion and
represented Guelph well.
In Guelph’s first game of the tournament, against the Hamilton Hawks, they held on for a 3:2 win despite being outshot 19:12. Their second game, which one can only describe as a “nail-biter”, was a demonstration of their character and determination. Going into the third period down 1:0, they continued to apply pressure to the opposition and with less than 3 minutes left in the game, Guelph tied it up, with a crazy backhand swoosh. Guelph went on to score another big goal for a 2:1 win.
With their confidence soaring, they now faced the home town favorites, the St Thomas Panthers. Holy machinaw, were the Guelph girls on fire! Guelph outplayed the Panthers in every period, peppering 29 shots at their goalie and putting 5 into the net for an easy 5:1 win.
With 3 wins in the tournament, Guelph would face off against the Panthers in the semi-finals, here they easily outplayed their opponents and won 3:1.
Guelph was heading to the finals to play the Hawks one last time. The girls were nervous, but they played hard as a team, making exceptional passes, skating hard and being aggressive on the puck. With Guelph winning 2:1 in the 3rd and with time running out, the Hawks in a desperation move pulled their goalie for an additional attacker. This proved to be ineffective as Guelph was able to hold them off, and go on to win the Gold!
