Midget BB Team Brings Smiles
At a recent tournament the Jr. Gryphons Midget BB team displayed great sportsmanship and brought smiles to lots of people (not to mention cookies!). Celebrate World Girls Hockey Weekend by reading their story!
At the recent Niagara Falls Girls Hockey Tournament, the Midget BB division saw the Ottawa Ice ( Donald Macdonell) meeting the Guelph Girls ( Kevin Lee) in the first game of round robin.
The competition was spirited and at the game was back and forth; both goalies had work to do!
Late in the first period, an Ottawa player landed awkwardly and injured her ankle, this would remove her from the game and subsequently her leg was found to be fractured. The Ottawa team won the game and while happy for the win, it was bitter-sweet after losing injured Amanda for the next 6-8 weeks.
During the post game coaches debriefing, there was a knock on the door, thinking it was the game sheet delivery, the coaches opened the door and there stood 3 players from Guelph with a box of Tim Horton’s Smile cookies. The players had made an agreement with the coach that the cookies would go to the team that won the game. The 3 Guelph players went around the Ottawa dressing room giving each player a cookie. The injured Ottawa player had already left for the hospital and the Guelph coach sent a Tim Horton’s gift card and a get well card from the Guelph team to the injured Ottawa player as she did not get to share in the post-game.
This is a great example of leaving the competition on the ice and shows many of the OWHA values of friendship, respect, fun and integrity.
