Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: I’m not sure my daughter is ready to play hockey. Shouldn’t she be a better skater?
The Guelph Girls Hockey Association welcomes skaters of all levels. The first rule of Girls Hockey is to have fun!
Our FUNdamentals program is designed to teach hockey basics — including skating — to players as
young as 5. The program focuses on skating, stopping, turning, puck handling, shooting, and passing, all in a
friendly and fun environment.

Q2: My daughter is too old to start playing hockey. She doesn't know anything about the game.
Hockey is for all ages — it’s never too late to start! GGHA coaches support girls of all experience levels, helping
them learn the game, build confidence, become part of a team, and enjoy the camaraderie of Canada’s game.
Q3: How long is the hockey season?
The season begins with evaluation skates in mid-September. House league runs from October through late March or early April.
Q4: What is the time commitment and when are games and practices?
House league teams generally have one 50-minute practice and one 50-minute game per week. Practices are typically held
Friday evenings, with games on Saturday and/or Sunday. Final schedules are confirmed in late September or early October,
depending on league and ice availability.
Q5: Is there a lot of travel involved in hockey?
GGHA house league teams play in the Kitchener Girls Local League (KGLL) against nearby centres such as
Cambridge, Fergus, Waterloo, Kitchener, Ayr, Stratford, Woolwich, Wilmot, and Woodstock. Teams play 10 games in the fall
and 10 in the winter, with 5 away games per half-season. Occasionally, teams may participate in tournaments with prior discussion.
Q6: Isn’t hockey expensive?
Your registration fee includes approximately six months of instruction and games. Equipment is available at various price
points, and many families buy used gear to save costs. Optional tournaments may involve a small additional fee, discussed in advance by coaches.
Q7: Can I get involved with my daughter in the sport?
Absolutely! GGHA relies on volunteers, and we welcome involvement as coaches, team staff, board members, or committee volunteers.
If you’re interested, please contact the Association President.
Q8: Why choose Guelph Girls Hockey over other ice sports?
While we may be biased, we believe girls hockey is the best winter sport option for girls. Our FUNdamentals program is equivalent
to Hockey Canada’s Initiation Program and is designed to be welcoming and fun. GGHA promotes women in sport, provides positive role
models, and supports all skill levels—from beginners to competitive players. Many GGHA players have gone on to varsity teams, but
our main focus is ensuring girls have fun—because girls rule on ice!
